Our take on the Mr. Heater MH4B Portable LP Heater

The Mr. Heater MH4B is a small propane heater that screws onto a 1 lb camping cylinder and runs on combustion with an automatic shut-off. It is built for spot heat in tight spaces, not for warming a room. Its only recorded price is $75.49, at the low end of what this class of heater costs.

Pros
  • Screws directly onto a 1 lb propane cylinder, no hose or regulator
  • Automatic shut-off if the unit tips or the flame goes out
  • Very compact and light enough to carry in a pack
  • Runs quietly with no fan or electricity
  • Simple push-button ignition
Cons
  • Low output, suited to spot heat only, not whole rooms
  • 1 lb cylinders run out fast and add up in cost
  • Produces combustion byproducts, so ventilation is required indoors

Questions and answers

Is the MH4B worth it?
If you need portable spot heat with no power source, yes. For heating a room at home, a larger heater or an electric option costs less to run.
How long does a 1 lb propane cylinder last?
Roughly a few hours on high, depending on temperature and setting. Carry spare cylinders for a full day out.
Can I use it indoors?
Only in a ventilated space, and never while sleeping. It is a combustion heater and produces carbon monoxide.
Does it need electricity or batteries?
No. Ignition and operation are self-contained on the propane cylinder.
What is in the box?
The heater itself. Propane cylinders are sold separately.
When is it cheapest?
Outdoor and heating gear tends to discount in late winter and early spring. The recorded price is $75.49 as of November 1, 2026.
