Our take on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 Lens

The NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 is Nikon's smallest full-frame Z zoom, made to collapse down and live on a camera body. It weighs 195 g and measures 51 mm long when retracted, with dust and moisture sealing and internal focusing. The trade-offs are a narrow 2x zoom range and a slow f/6.3 long end. At $210 at eBay as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range and is the cheapest way into a full-frame Z zoom.

Best forNikon Z full-frame owners who want a light walkaround zoomTravelers and hikers counting gramsVideo shooters using a gimbal or handheld rigBuyers who want the kit lens without paying kit prices
Pros
  • Very light at 195 g and short at 51 mm retracted
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant sealing
  • Internal focusing keeps the barrel from extending while focusing
  • 24mm wide end covers landscapes and group shots
  • Quiet stepping autofocus suits video
  • Cheap at $210 compared with most Z zooms
Cons
  • Only 24-50mm, so it gives up real reach
  • f/6.3 at 50mm limits low-light and shallow depth of field
  • No VR, so stabilization depends on the camera body
  • No lens hood or pouch in the box
  • 35 cm minimum focus is not close

Questions and answers

Is the 24-50mm worth buying on its own?
Yes if you want the smallest possible full-frame Z zoom and shoot in decent light. If you need reach or fast apertures, put the money toward the 24-70mm f/4 S instead.
How does it compare with the 24-70mm f/4 S?
The 24-70mm S is sharper, faster across the range and has a longer zoom, but it is much bigger, heavier and more expensive. The 24-50mm wins on portability and price.
Does it have image stabilization?
No. Stabilization comes from the camera body, so it works on IBIS-equipped Z bodies like the Z5, Z6 and Z7 but not on bodies without it.
What comes in the box?
Front and rear lens caps only. There is no lens hood or pouch, and the petal hood HB-98 is sold separately.
Will it fit my Nikon Z camera?
It uses the Nikon Z mount and fits every Z body, full-frame or APS-C. On a DX body it behaves like a 36-75mm lens.
When is it cheapest?
It is most often discounted when sold as part of a camera kit or during Nikon's seasonal sales. At $210 at eBay as of November 3, 2026, it is already near the bottom of its recent range.
Where is the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 Lens cheapest?
At Nikon USA, for $299.95, 33% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 Lens?
