The NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR is Nikon's superzoom for Z-mount mirrorless bodies, covering wide angle to long telephoto in one 725 g lens. It is weather-sealed, has 5-stop-class VR and internal focusing, and focuses as close as 3.94 ft at 400mm for 0.35x magnification. • Built-in VR helps at 400mm
  • Weather-sealed barrel for outdoor use
  • 0.35x close-up at 400mm
Cons

Questions and answers

Is the 28-400mm worth it over the 24-200mm?
If you shoot wildlife or sports and want 400mm without a second lens, yes. The 24-200mm is smaller, faster at the long end and sharper, so pick it if 200mm is enough.
How does it compare with the 100-400mm?
The 100-400mm is sharper, faster and takes teleconverters, but it costs more and weighs more. The 28-400mm wins on range and portability.
Is f/8 at 400mm a problem?
In daylight, no. In shade, at dusk or for fast action you will need higher ISO or a faster prime. VR helps with still subjects, not motion.
Does it work on APS-C Z bodies?
Yes. On a Z50 or Z fc it behaves like a 42-600mm, which makes it a strong wildlife option for those cameras.
What is in the box?
The lens, front and rear caps and the square lens hood. No case or tripod collar is included.
When is it cheapest?
It has sold near $1,099 at Willoughby's Photo Emporium as of November 3, 2026, the low end of its recent range. Holiday and bundle sales are the usual times to watch.
Where is the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens cheapest?
At Willoughby's Photo Emporium, for $1,099.00, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens?

Where can I buy the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens?
