Our take on the Roland RD-88 EX 88-Key Digital Stage Piano

The Roland RD-88 EX is an 88-key stage piano built around Roland's PHA-4 hammer-action keyboard with ivory-feel keys and touch sensitivity. It packs the SuperNATURAL and ZEN-Core sound engines, onboard speakers and USB MIDI/audio into a 13.5 kg chassis, so it works as a gigging board and a home practice piano. At $1,099.99 at Schmitt Music as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, with five stores listing it new.

Pros
  • PHA-4 hammer action with ivory-feel keys feels close to an acoustic piano
  • 13.5 kg and 128.4 cm wide: light and compact for an 88-key weighted board
  • Onboard speakers make it usable without an amp or PA
  • USB MIDI/audio plus a USB memory port for recording and playback
  • ZEN-Core engine lets you load and edit additional sounds
  • Includes a damper pedal and supports FC1/FC2 pedal functions
Cons
  • No Bluetooth connectivity
  • Only one pedal included; a second pedal for soft or expression costs extra
  • No cover or stand in the box despite the adjustable-stand spec
  • Onboard speakers are modest for loud band settings
  • No built-in audio interface beyond USB audio; no XLR outputs

Yes, if you want an 88-key weighted stage piano that is light enough to gig with. At $1,099.99 at Schmitt Music as of November 3, 2026, it is at the low end of its recent range, so it is a good time to buy.
How does the RD-88 EX differ from the original RD-88?
