Is the Säljan countertop worth it?

For a rental, laundry room or low-budget kitchen, yes. It is inexpensive, easy to clean and simple to install. It is not a long-term surface for a heavily used family kitchen.

How does it compare with IKEA's Ekbacken?

Both are laminate on particleboard at the same 1-1/8 inch thickness. Ekbacken offers more finishes; Säljan is the cheaper, more limited option.

Yes, it can be cut with a fine-tooth saw. Seal any exposed cut edges and around sink or range openings so water does not reach the particleboard core.

Can I put a hot pan on it?

No. Laminate scorches and can delaminate under heat. Use trivets and hot pads.

Is $129 a good price?

It is the only new price listed as of November 5, 2026, so there is no recent range to compare against. Check it against IKEA's own listed price before buying.

One countertop. Mounting hardware and sealant for cut edges are not included.

Our take on the SALJAN Laminate

The Säljan is IKEA's budget laminate countertop, built on a particleboard core with a 1-1/8 inch (3.8 cm) thick edge and a wipe-clean laminate surface. It comes in several stone and wood-look finishes, including the dark gray stone effect shown here. It is a step below IKEA's Ekbacken line in finish choice but costs less. The 74-inch length is $129 at ModeSens as of November 5, 2026, the only new price listed.
