Is the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 worth it?

Yes if you want a light, cheap full-frame 50mm. At $160 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it costs far less than Sony's f/1.4 or f/1.2 50mm lenses. Accept slower autofocus and softer corners wide open.

How does it compare with the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8?

The Zeiss 55mm is sharper wide open and focuses faster, but it costs several times more and is heavier. The FE 50mm f/1.8 wins on price and weight.

Does it work on APS-C Sony cameras?

Yes. On an APS-C body like the a6400 it behaves like a 75mm lens, which suits portraits. It is a full-frame lens, so you can move it to an A7 or A9 later.

The lens has no optical stabilization of its own. Stabilization comes from the camera body, so it works on A7 II and later bodies with in-body stabilization but not on older ones.

The lens, a front and rear cap, and a lens hood. It uses 49 mm filters, which you buy separately.

It is a budget lens that rarely drops far. The current $160 at eBay as of November 4, 2026 is near the bottom of its range, so waiting is unlikely to save much.

Our take on the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens

The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is the cheapest way into a fast full-frame prime for Sony E-mount cameras. It is tiny and light at 186 g and 59.5 mm long, with a 49 mm filter thread, and its f/1.8 aperture gives shallow depth of field and usable light in dim rooms. Optically it is a simple 5-group, 6-element design with one aspherical element and seven aperture blades, and it is not weather sealed. The best new price is $160 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, across 15 stores listing it new; that sits at the low end of its recent range, so it is a good moment to buy.
