Our take on the The Futon Shop Wool Latex Futon Mattress Med Firm

The Futon Shop Wool Latex Futon Mattress Med Firm is a handcrafted futon mattress built from Dunlop latex, micro coils, American wool and an organic cotton casing. It is tufted, chemical-free and aimed at everyday sleeping as well as sofa-bed use. The medium-firm feel targets back and side sleepers who want pressure relief without a soft sink. It sits at the upper end of futon mattress pricing, so compare its cost against a standard innerspring futon before committing.

Questions and answers

Is this mattress worth the price?
If you sleep on your futon nightly and want latex, wool and no chemical flame retardants, the materials justify the premium. For occasional guest use, a cheaper innerspring futon does the job.
How does it compare with a standard innerspring futon?
It adds Dunlop latex and micro coils for more contouring support, plus a wool and organic cotton build. Standard futons use poly foam and synthetic covers and cost far less.
Does it work on any frame?
It is designed for slatted platform bed frames and futon sofa frames. A solid platform limits airflow, which matters with a wool fill.
How thick and heavy is it?
Thickness varies by size, and the wool fill alone weighs 14 to 32 lbs depending on size. Plan for two people to move or rotate it.
Is it good for allergies?
Wool resists dust mites and moisture, and the cotton casing is USDA certified organic. Latex can still trigger reactions in people with a latex allergy.
When is it cheapest?
Futon mattresses typically discount around major holiday sales and at year-end clearance. Watch the price history rather than buying at list.
