Our take on the WD Caviar GP WD5000AACS 500GB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

The WD Caviar GP WD5000AACS is a 500GB 3.5-inch SATA desktop hard drive from Western Digital's GreenPower line, built for low power draw and quiet operation rather than speed. It spins at 7200 rpm but uses variable spindle speed to save energy, which makes it slower than standard 7200 rpm drives in sustained transfers. At $26.99 at neweggbusiness.com as of November 5, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent price range and is one of the cheapest new 500GB drives among the 4 stores listing it.

Questions and answers

Is this drive fast enough for a main Windows install?
It works, but it is not a fast boot drive. The GreenPower design trades speed for low power, so expect slower app loading than a standard 7200 rpm drive or any SSD.
Does it work in a RAID array?
Western Digital did not rate the Caviar GP for RAID. Variable spindle speed and aggressive head parking can cause drives to drop out of RAID arrays, so use it as a single drive instead.
What's in the box?
Typically just the bare drive. SATA cables and screws are not included, so check that your case and motherboard have them.
Is $26.99 a good price?
It is at the low end of recent pricing for this drive and among the cheapest new listings across the 4 stores. For 500GB the cost per gigabyte is fair, though larger drives often cost less per gigabyte.
Will it fit my desktop?
Yes if your case has a standard 3.5-inch bay and a free SATA port. It is a full-size 3.5-inch drive, not a 2.5-inch laptop drive.
Is it still supported by Western Digital?
This is a long-discontinued model, so do not count on a manufacturer warranty. Buy from a seller with a clear return policy.
Where is the WD Caviar GP WD5000AACS 500GB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive cheapest?
