Our take on the Wood Carving Kit Whittling Kit with Leather Case

A 20-piece whittling set: 4 large knives, 8 detail knives, 8 basswood blocks, a leather strop, polishing compound, gloves and a manual in a leather roll case. The blades are high carbon steel with wooden handles, so they take a keen edge but need drying and oiling to keep rust off. The kit is sold under no recognizable brand, so there is no maker to ask about steel hardness or warranty. At $54.39 at Amazon as of November 5, 2026, it is the best of three store prices; no earlier price history is available to judge the deal.

Pros
  • Everything needed to start: knives, basswood, strop and compound
  • 12 knives split between roughing and fine detail work
  • Roll case with handle and shoulder strap keeps tools organized
  • Gloves included for the hand that holds the wood
  • Pre-sharpened blades usable out of the box
Cons
  • No named manufacturer, so no warranty or steel spec to check
  • Description says stainless steel while the spec says high carbon steel
  • Carbon steel rusts without drying and oiling after each session
  • Budget knives often need re-sharpening and edge touch-ups soon
  • Basswood blocks are small, so projects are limited in size

What reviewers say

Buyers of unbranded carving kits like this generally treat them as starter sets: good value for trying the hobby, with edge quality and steel that vary from knife to knife. Most say the strop and compound matter more than expected for keeping the blades usable.

Questions and answers

Is this kit good for a total beginner?
Yes. It includes knives, basswood blocks, a strop, compound and gloves, so you can start carving without buying anything else. Plan to hone the blades before your first cut.
Are the blades stainless or carbon steel?
The listing conflicts: the description says stainless steel, the specs say high carbon steel. Treat them as carbon steel: dry and oil them after each session to prevent rust.
How many knives and blocks come in the box?
Four large whittling knives, eight small detail knives and eight basswood blocks, plus the strop, polishing compound, gloves, manual and leather case.
Is $54.39 a good price?
It is the lowest of the three stores listing it new as of November 5, 2026. With no price history available, compare it against similar 20-piece kits before deciding.
Can I carve hardwood with these knives?
They are meant for soft woods like the included basswood. Hardwoods will dull the edges fast and strain the handles.
What should I do if a knife arrives dull?
Use the included strop and polishing compound to bring up the edge. If the bevel is uneven, a few passes on a fine stone before stropping will fix it.
Where is the Wood Carving Kit Whittling Kit with Leather Case cheapest?
At Amazon, for $54.39, 26% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Wood Carving Kit Whittling Kit with Leather Case?
3 stores we checked sell it, including The Home Depot, eBay, Amazon.
