Our take on the ZWO Seestar S50 Smart Telescope

The Seestar S50 is a 50 mm apochromatic triplet refractor on a motorized alt-azimuth mount that aligns itself, focuses itself and stacks images in the companion app. It is built for astrophotography rather than visual observing: you point it from a phone over Wi-Fi and it produces finished images of the Moon, Sun (with the included solar filter), galaxies and nebulae. A 6000 mAh battery runs about 6 hours, and the whole 2.5 kg unit packs into the included carrying case. At $401.11 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it sits well below its usual street price of roughly $500, making this the lowest price seen recently.

Best forFirst-time astrophotographers who want images without learning equatorial mounts
Travelers and campers who need a grab-and-go rig
Backyard users in light-polluted suburbs
Families sharing views from a phone or tablet
Pros
  • Self-aligning GoTo mount removes polar alignment
  • Apochromatic triplet optics keep stars free of false color
  • Built-in battery lasts about 6 hours per charge
  • Solar filter included for daytime Sun imaging
  • Compact 2.5 kg body with carrying case
  • Wi-Fi 5G and Bluetooth control from the Seestar app
Cons
  • 50 mm aperture limits detail on small galaxies and planets
  • Alt-azimuth mount means field rotation on long exposures
  • No eyepiece: it is imaging-only, not for visual use
  • Needs a phone or tablet; no standalone hand controller
  • Not suited to humid storage; needs a dry case or desiccant

What reviewers say

Owners treat the Seestar S50 as the easiest way into deep-sky imaging, praising how quickly a beginner gets a stacked image of a nebula. Criticism centers on its small aperture and the alt-az field rotation that caps long exposures, plus app quirks.

Pros
  • Setup and alignment take minutes
  • Deep-sky images surprise for the price
  • Portable enough to take on trips
  • Solar mode works well with the included filter
Cons
  • Planetary views are small and soft
  • Long exposures show field rotation
  • App updates have caused connection glitches
  • Dew and humidity affect the optics without a heater
