Which is better for hiking and camping?

The Midland GXT3000. It has GMRS repeater channels, a rechargeable pack rated for 18 hours, and a wider set of privacy codes. The Cobra works for short trips but has no repeater access.

Do I need a license for the Midland?

Yes. GMRS operation requires an FCC license. The Cobra listing does not state a license requirement, but its channels overlap FRS/GMRS, so check before transmitting on GMRS-only channels.

Is the Cobra worth it for security or construction work?

Yes, if you want headsets and hands-free VOX on a budget. The two included surveillance headsets and $69.95 price suit shift work. The Midland has no headsets and costs more.

Which lasts longer on a charge?

The Midland, at up to 18 hours on its 1800 mAh Li-ion pack with a 4-hour recharge. The Cobra runs on 6 AA batteries, so runtime depends on the cells you install.

Is the Midland worth the extra money?

For repeater access, a rechargeable battery, and more channels, yes. If you only need short-range talk between two people, the Cobra saves about $90.
