Which is better for hiking and overlanding?

The Midland GXT67. Its 5 watts, repeater channels, and IP67 body hold up where the Cobra's FRS power and AA batteries fall short.

Do I need a license for either?

The Midland needs an FCC GMRS license. The Cobra works on FRS channels without a license.

Is the Midland worth the extra money?

Yes if you need repeater access or a rechargeable, waterproof radio. If you just need two radios for a crew, the Cobra at $69.95 covers it for far less.

Which has longer battery life?

The Midland: 16 hours on a 2500 mAh Li-ion pack with USB-C charging. Cobra gives no runtime and runs on 6 AA batteries.

Can the Cobra reach 23 miles?

No. That figure assumes clear line of sight. Expect under a mile in woods or buildings, similar to any FRS radio.

Which is better for job sites and security?

The Cobra, because it includes two headsets and VOX for hands-free use at a low price. The Midland is one radio with no headset.
