Our take on the Apple iPad 10.9-inch

The 10th-generation iPad is Apple's mainstream tablet, with a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, the A14 Bionic chip and a USB-C port. It moved the front camera to the landscape edge with Center Stage, so video calls keep you in frame. The 64GB Wi-Fi model is the entry version; a 5G cellular option exists. It sits above the 9th-generation iPad in price and below the iPad Air.

Cons
  • 64GB fills fast with apps, photos and games
  • No headphone jack

Questions and answers

Is the 64GB iPad enough?
For streaming, browsing, email and schoolwork, yes. If you shoot lots of 4K video, keep large games installed or download movies, 64GB runs out quickly, and there is no SD card slot.
Does it work with the Apple Pencil?
It works with the USB-C Apple Pencil and the first-generation Apple Pencil via a USB-C adapter. It does not support the second-generation Apple Pencil that magnetically attaches to the iPad Air and Pro.
How does it compare to the 9th-generation iPad?
The 10.9-inch model has a larger screen, USB-C, a landscape front camera and a newer design. The 9th-generation iPad is cheaper and keeps the headphone jack and Lightning port.
How long does the battery last?
Apple rates it at up to 10 hours of web browsing or video on Wi-Fi. Heavy gaming or bright screens cut that noticeably.
Is the cellular version worth it?
Only if you need data away from Wi-Fi often. The 5G model costs more up front and needs a separate data plan; tethering from a phone covers occasional use.
What's in the box?
The iPad, a USB-C charging cable and a 20W USB-C power adapter. The Apple Pencil and keyboard are sold separately.
Where is the Apple iPad 10.9-inch cheapest?
At Trace Media, for $264.02, 41% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
