Our take on the BeaverCraft S08 Wood Carving Set of 8 Knives

The BeaverCraft S08 is an eight-piece wood carving knife set with carbon steel blades and ash wood handles, sold with a canvas tool roll. It covers the common carving shapes, from a roughing knife to spoon and detail blades, so it suits both beginners and experienced carvers. Carbon steel takes a keen edge but needs drying and oiling after use. Pricing moves with the set's usual range; check the current best price against recent history before buying.

Questions and answers

Is this set good for a beginner?
Yes. It includes the knife shapes most beginners need for whittling and spoon carving, and the blades come sharp. Budget time for learning to strop and care for carbon steel.
Do the blades rust?
Carbon steel can rust. Dry each blade after use and apply a light oil, and store the knives in the roll.
What is included in the set?
Eight carving knives in assorted shapes and a tool roll. The set is aimed at spoon carving and general whittling.
Do I need to sharpen them out of the box?
They arrive sharp. A strop and compound will keep them cutting; a stone is only needed for nicks or reshaping.
Is it worth it over buying single knives?
If you want a full starter kit in one purchase, the set costs less than buying the same shapes separately. Buy singles if you only carve one style.
When is the best time to buy?
Watch the price history and buy when it sits near the low end of its recent range, often around holiday sales.
