Our take on the Coast G22R Flashlight

The Coast G22R is a penlight-sized EDC flashlight with a rechargeable ZX100 battery and a backup AAA slot, so it keeps working when the rechargeable cell runs out. It puts out 50 to 50-plus lumens through a fixed Bulls-Eye spot beam rated for 63 m, with 2.5 hours on high and 6 hours on low. At 1.27 oz and 3.66 in long, it clips into a shirt pocket and disappears. The best new price is $14.95 at REI as of November 5, 2026, which is at the low end of what this light typically sells for.

Best forEveryday carry in a pocket or bagShirt-pocket or pen-slot carry at workBuyers who want a rechargeable light with an AAA backupSmall, light tasks like finding keys or reading in the dark
Pros
  • Dual power: rechargeable ZX100 plus a standard AAA backup
  • Very light at 1.27 oz and short at 3.66 in
  • IP54 rating handles dust and splashes
  • Battery indicator shows charge status
  • Pocket clip included
  • Aluminum body feels sturdier than plastic penlights
Cons
  • Low output: 50 lumens minimum and a fixed spot beam, not a floody work light
  • 2.5 hours on high is short for a rechargeable
  • AAA battery is not included
  • Fixed focus means no zoom or beam adjustment
  • IP54 is splash-resistant, not submersible

Questions and answers

Is the Coast G22R worth it?
At $14.95 at REI as of November 5, 2026, it is a cheap way to get a rechargeable pocket light with an AAA backup. It suits small tasks, not search-and-rescue brightness.
How does it compare with a regular AAA penlight?
It is similar in size but adds a rechargeable ZX100 battery, a charge indicator and a brighter spot beam. The trade-off is that the rechargeable cell needs charging, though the AAA slot covers you.
How long does the battery last?
Coast rates it at 2.5 hours on high and 6 hours on low. The AAA backup gives you extra runtime once the ZX100 is drained.
Is it waterproof?
It is IP54 rated, which means dust-resistant and protected against splashes. Do not submerge it.
What comes in the box?
You get the light, the rechargeable ZX100 battery and a pocket clip. The AAA battery is not included, so add one if you want the backup ready.
When is it cheapest?
The current best new price is $14.95 at REI as of November 5, 2026, with two stores listing it new. Watch for holiday and outdoor-gear sales, when small Coast lights often drop a few dollars.
Where is the Coast G22R Flashlight cheapest?
At REI, for $14.95, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Coast G22R Flashlight?
Rated 4.3 out of 5 from 21 ratings.
