Is the DeWalt DW788 worth $499?

For frequent scroll work, yes. It cuts smoothly, holds speed well and handles 2-inch stock. Casual users may find a lighter, cheaper saw enough.

What is the difference between the DW788 and the older DW788 Type 1?

The current DW788 keeps the same 20-inch capacity and 3/4-inch stroke. Later versions refined the blade clamps and speed control; check the model number on the saw before buying used.

What blades does the DW788 take?

It takes standard 20-inch scroll saw blades, both pin-end and plain-end. Plain-end blades give finer cuts; pin-end blades are easier to change.

Can the DW788 cut 2-inch thick wood?

Yes, its rated depth of cut is 2 inches. Feed slowly in hardwoods at that thickness so the 1.3-amp motor does not bog down.

Does the DW788 come with a stand?

No. The saw is sold as the tool itself; a stand or bench mounting is separate. Plan for a sturdy surface, since the saw weighs 56 lbs.

When is the DW788 cheapest?

Only one store lists it new at $499 as of November 7, 2026, so there is no lower price to wait for right now. Watch for holiday sales at that store.

Our take on the DeWALT 3/4" Stroke Length, 2" Depth of Cut, Scroll Saw

The DeWalt DW788 is a corded 20-inch scroll saw with a 3/4-inch stroke, variable speed from 400 to 1,750 strokes per minute, and a 2-inch depth of cut. It is one of the few scroll saws built for daily shop use, with a cast table that tilts 45 degrees for bevel cuts. At 56 lbs it stays put on a bench but is not a saw you carry to a job site. The best new price is $499 at The Home Depot as of November 7, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is little price competition to wait for.
