Our take on the Fluval Clearmax Filter Media

Clearmax is a granular chemical filter media from Fluval that targets phosphate in freshwater and saltwater tanks. It comes as three 100-gram nylon bags that drop into any Fluval canister filter, and Fluval rates it for tanks up to 100 L. Phosphate control matters because excess phosphate feeds algae and dulls water clarity. At $14.99 at Stoffel's Country Store as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent price range across the three stores that stock it.

Best forCanister-filter owners fighting algae driven by phosphateFreshwater and saltwater tanks up to about 100 LRoutine monthly chemical filtration in a Fluval canisterShoppers who want a drop-in media with no setup
Pros
  • Targets phosphate directly, which helps curb algae growth
  • Works in fresh and salt water
  • Pre-bagged in three 100-gram nylon bags, so no measuring
  • Drops into any Fluval canister filter
  • Also marketed to reduce odors
Cons
  • Only rated for tanks up to 100 L, so large tanks need more bags
  • Resin exhausts and must be replaced monthly
  • Does nothing for ammonia or nitrite; it is a supplement, not a full media stack
  • Phosphate removal can be slow to show in tests

What reviewers say

Owners of Fluval canisters generally treat Clearmax as a useful add-on for phosphate and algae problems rather than a cure-all. Most feedback centers on how quickly it clears cloudy or algae-prone water when phosphate is the cause.

Pros
  • Easy drop-in bags
  • Noticeable drop in phosphate readings for some users
  • Helps with algae and water clarity
Cons
  • Needs monthly replacement, which adds up
  • Limited effect when phosphate is not the problem
  • Small tank rating for the price per bag

Questions and answers

Is Clearmax worth it?
If your canister filter already runs biological and mechanical media and you have a phosphate or algae problem, it is a cheap, low-effort addition. If your phosphate tests low, it will not do much.
How often do I replace it?
Fluval calls for monthly replacement. Resin exhausts over time, so old bags stop pulling phosphate even though they look unchanged.
Will it fit my filter?
The bags drop into any Fluval canister filter. They are sized for Fluval canisters, so other brands may need the bags placed loosely in a media basket.
Does it work in saltwater tanks?
Yes. Fluval rates it for both freshwater and saltwater, and phosphate control matters in reef and fish-only tanks alike.
How much tank does one pack treat?
Fluval rates the media for tanks up to 100 L. Larger tanks should use more bags or expect less phosphate removal per bag.
When is it cheapest?
The best new price was $14.99 at Stoffel's Country Store as of November 4, 2026, the low end of its recent range. Media like this rarely discounts deeply, so buy when you need a replacement rather than waiting.
Where is the Fluval Clearmax Filter Media cheapest?
At Stoffel's Country Store, for $14.99, 21% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Fluval Clearmax Filter Media?
6 stores we checked sell it, including Stoffel's Country Store, eBay, Fins and Feathers, Amazon, Chewy.com.
