Is the Ibanez GRX20 good for a beginner?

Yes. It is light, has a slim neck and two humbuckers that make distorted rock tones easy to reach. Budget for a professional setup, since factory action and intonation vary.

How does it compare with the GRX40?

The GRX40 adds a single-coil in the middle position for more tonal options. The GRX20 keeps it simple with two humbuckers and usually costs less.

Does the tremolo stay in tune?

Light vibrato use is fine. Heavy dive-bombing pulls it sharp, so most owners have the nut slots filed and the tremolo set up before gigging.

What comes in the box?

The guitar alone, with no gig bag, cable or strap. You will need an amp, a cable and a tuner to start playing.

Is $179.99 a good price?

It is at the low end of what the GRX20 has sold for recently, and 6 stores list it new as of November 4, 2026. Check the other stores before buying if you want the absolute lowest.

Can I upgrade the pickups later?

Yes. It uses standard humbucker routing, so most aftermarket humbuckers drop in. A new nut and a setup are cheaper first upgrades.

Our take on the Ibanez GRX20 Gio Electric Guitar

The GRX20 is Ibanez's entry-level S-style electric, a solid poplar double-cutaway with a 25.5-inch scale, maple neck and rosewood fretboard. It carries two passive ceramic Infinity R humbuckers and a FAT-6 tremolo, so it covers rock and metal tones without a pedalboard. The 42 mm plastic nut and medium frets keep it a straightforward first or backup guitar. At $179.99 at DeLuca Music as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, with 6 stores pricing it new.
