Our take on the KingSpec M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive

The KingSpec M.2 2280 1TB is a budget NVMe drive on the PCIe Gen3 x4 interface, rated at up to 3,500 MB/s sequential read. That read figure is at the ceiling of what Gen3 x4 allows, so it is a fit for older laptops and desktops with an M.2 slot rather than a Gen4 board. At $145.99 at Newegg.com as of November 3, 2026, it is priced well above what 1TB Gen3 drives typically sell for, and only one store lists it new.

Best forUpgrading a Gen3 laptop or desktop with an open M.2 2280 slotSecondary storage for games and media on a budget buildReplacing a hard drive or SATA SSD in an older machine
Pros
  • 1TB capacity in a single-sided-friendly M.2 2280 stick
  • NVMe over PCIe Gen3 x4, up to 3,500 MB/s read
  • No cables or 2.5-inch bay needed
  • Simple drop-in upgrade for most recent laptops and boards
Cons
  • Gen3 speeds only; Gen4 and Gen5 slots will run it below their potential
  • No DRAM cache listed, which can slow sustained writes
  • Write speed and endurance (TBW) are not published here
  • $145.99 is high for a 1TB Gen3 drive; comparable drives often cost less
  • Only one store lists it new, so price competition is thin

Questions and answers

Is this drive worth $145.99?
At $145.99 at Newegg.com as of November 3, 2026, it is expensive for a 1TB Gen3 NVMe drive. Comparable 1TB Gen3 drives usually sell for noticeably less, so check the price history before buying.
Will it work in a PCIe Gen4 slot?
Yes, it is backward and forward compatible, but it will run at Gen3 speeds, up to about 3,500 MB/s. You would not get Gen4 throughput from it.
What are its write speeds and endurance?
KingSpec rates read speed at up to 3,500 MB/s; write speed and TBW endurance are not stated in the listed specs. Ask the seller for the write rating if you plan heavy sustained writes.
Does it fit a PS5 or a laptop?
It is a standard M.2 2280 stick, so it fits most laptops with an M.2 NVMe slot. The PS5 requires a Gen4 drive with a heatsink, so this Gen3 model is not a good fit there.
What is in the box?
Typically just the drive; mounting screws are usually not included. Check that your board or laptop already has its M.2 screw.
When is it cheapest?
With only one store listing it new, discounts depend on that store's sales. Watch for seasonal sales events and check the price history for past lows.
Where is the KingSpec M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive cheapest?
At Newegg.com, for $145.99, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the KingSpec M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe Internal Solid State Drive?
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 52 ratings.
