How long does it take to warm up?

Expect roughly 45 minutes to an hour before the wax starts moving. A warm room speeds this up.

What bulb does it use?

A 15 W incandescent bulb, the type lava lamps are designed around. LED bulbs do not give off enough heat to move the wax.

Is it safe for a kid's room?

It is a tabletop lamp with a glass globe and a hot bulb, so it suits older kids better. Keep it out of reach of young children and away from anything flammable.

The globe holds 52 ounces and the lamp stands about 16.3 inches tall, the large version of the classic Lava lamp.

Our take on the Lava Lamp 16.3"

The Lava the Original 16.3-inch lamp is the big version of the classic lava lamp: a 52-ounce glass globe of yellow wax in purple liquid on a hand-spun silver aluminum base and cap. A 15 W incandescent bulb heats the wax so the blobs rise, split and sink, and the in-line switch turns it on and off. At $49.98 at Sir Troy's Toy Kingdom as of November 5, 2026, it is the lowest of the four stores pricing it new.
