The New Balance Fresh Foam X 1540v4 is a max-cushion road running and walking shoe built on a Fresh Foam X EVA midsole with a rubber outsole and an engineered mesh and knit upper. It stands out for its stability-focused cushioning and its wide size run, including wide and extra-wide widths up to US 16. It is a heavier shoe at about 13 oz, so it suits comfort and support more than speed. The best new price is $199.95 at Zappos as of November 7, 2026, with only one store listing it new.

Owners of the 1540 line generally praise the cushioning and the wide-width fit, and the v4 keeps that formula. Some find the shoe heavy and the upper warm for faster running.
