Will my cat actually use a top entry box?

Most cats adapt within a few days, especially younger ones. Older, arthritic or very timid cats may not, so keep a low-entry pan available during the switch.

Is it big enough for a large cat?

The pan is about 20 by 15 inches with a wide top opening, which suits most adult cats. Very large cats may find the interior tight for turning around.

How is it better than a hooded box with a door?

There is no flap to push through, and the grated lid catches litter as the cat exits. Dogs also cannot nose open a top opening the way they can a front door.

The lid opens from one side for scooping, and the whole top lifts off for a full wash. The smooth plastic wipes down easily with soap and water.

Does it work with litter pan liners?

Liners fit, but you have to drape them over the tall walls and the top opening makes them fiddly. Most owners skip liners and rinse the pan instead.

When is the best time to buy?

It is a low-cost item that rarely drops far below $25. The current $25.59 at Furville Pet Supplies as of November 5, 2026 is already near the bottom of its recent range.

Made in the USA

Does your cat scatter litter all over your floors when exiting his litter box? Are you constantly having to keep an eye on your dog to make sure he's not eating your cat's used litter? If these scenarios are familiar to you, consider a Petmate® Top Entry Litter Box.

Unlike standard, open litter boxes, the Petmate Top Entry Litter Box has a unique "box-design" that completely encloses that space where your cat uses the restroom so that no litter can escape the box. The generous wide top opening allows cats of all sizes to jump up and into the box and easily exit when they're done. As your cat jumps out, any remaining litter on his paws is trapped on the non-slip, textured lid and falls back into the box through grates, keeping your floors free of litter. Because of the taller walls and top-entry opening, dogs are unable to reach the bottom of the litter box to eat used litter.

Made in the USA from 95% pre-consumer recycled materials, this eco-friendly litter box has a built-in hook for hanging litter scoops and an attached lid that opens from one side for easy cleaning.
