Is the Petmate Top Entry Litter Box worth it?

It is a low-cost way to keep dogs out of the litter and reduce scatter. It suits cats willing to jump; cats that refuse top entry will not use it.

Will my cat use a top-entry box?

Most healthy adult cats adapt within a few days. Older, arthritic or very large cats may prefer a low-entry box instead.

How big is it, and does it fit large cats?

It measures about 20.3 by 15.1 by 15.2 inches. The top opening is wide enough for most cats, but very large cats may find it snug.

Does it come with a scoop or liner?

No scoop or liner is included. It has a built-in hook for hanging a scoop, and standard liners can be used.

Our take on the Petmate Top Entry

The Petmate Top Entry Litter Box is an enclosed cat box with a wide opening on top instead of a side door. Cats jump in and out through the lid, and the textured lid grates catch litter from their paws and drop it back inside. The tall walls and closed top keep dogs out of the litter. It is made in the USA from 95% pre-consumer recycled plastic and weighs about 3.9 lb. At $25.59 at Furville Pet Supplies as of November 5, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range across 6 stores.

Made in the USA

Does your cat scatter litter all over your floors when exiting his litter box? Are you constantly having to keep an eye on your dog to make sure he's not eating your cat's used litter? If these scenarios are familiar to you, consider a Petmate® Top Entry Litter Box.

Unlike standard, open litter boxes, the Petmate Top Entry Litter Box has a unique "box-design" that completely encloses that space where your cat uses the restroom so that no litter can escape the box. The generous wide top opening allows cats of all sizes to jump up and into the box and easily exit when they're done. As your cat jumps out, any remaining litter on his paws is trapped on the non-slip, textured lid and falls back into the box through grates, keeping your floors free of litter. Because of the taller walls and top-entry opening, dogs are unable to reach the bottom of the litter box to eat used litter.

Made in the USA from 95% pre-consumer recycled materials, this eco-friendly litter box has a built-in hook for hanging litter scoops and an attached lid that opens from one side for easy cleaning.
