Our take on the Pitbull Mutant Series 5-String 45-130 Light Extra Long Bass Guitar Strings

Pitbull Mutant Series 5-String bass strings are a light-gauge set (.045 to .130) with roundwound construction and extra-long scale length. The light top strings bend easily while the .130 low B keeps tension for a five-string setup. At $51.87 at Pitbull Strings as of November 7, 2026, this is the only new price listed, so there is no recent range to compare against.

Pros
  • Light top gauges make bending and vibrato easier
  • .130 low B holds tension on a five-string
  • Roundwound winding gives a bright, cutting tone
  • Extra-long length fits 35-inch and longer scale basses
  • One set covers the full five-string range
Cons

  • Light gauge means less tension and thump than heavier sets
  • Roundwounds lose brightness faster than flatwounds
  • Extra-long strings can need trimming on shorter-scale basses

Questions and answers

Will these fit a 35-inch scale five-string bass?
Yes. They are extra-long scale strings, which is the length needed for 35-inch and longer basses. On a 34-inch bass you will likely need to trim the ends.
What does the .045 to .130 gauge mean for playability?
The light top strings feel slinkier and bend more easily, while the .130 low B stays firm enough for a five-string. Expect a lighter feel than a standard-gauge set.
Are these roundwound or flatwound strings?
They are roundwound, so they sound bright and punchy when new. That brightness fades with playing time, faster than on flatwounds.
Is $51.87 a good price for this set?
Only one store lists a new price, $51.87 at Pitbull Strings as of November 7, 2026, so there is no recent range to judge against. Compare it with other light five-string sets before buying.
What is in the box?
A single set of five strings, gauged .045 to .130. No extras such as a string winder or cloth are listed.
When is the best time to buy?
With one store pricing it, discounts are unlikely to be frequent. Watch the price history for any drop rather than waiting for a sale.
Where is the Pitbull Mutant Series 5-String 45-130 Light Extra Long Bass Guitar Strings cheapest?
At Pitbull Strings, for $51.87, as of our latest check.
