Our take on the Safavieh Athens Shag Rug

The Safavieh Athens Shag is a power-loomed polypropylene shag rug with a 1 5/8-inch pile, sold in rectangle, runner, round and square shapes. It is OEKO-TEX certified and aimed at moderate-traffic rooms like bedrooms and family rooms. The 5'1" x 7'6" rectangle is the common size; check the current price against its recent range before buying, since shag rugs from Safavieh swing widely with size and color.

Questions and answers

Is the Safavieh Athens Shag worth it?
For a budget bedroom or family-room rug, yes. It is soft and inexpensive, but expect shedding and some flattening, so it suits low-stakes rooms better than a living room centerpiece.
How do I clean a shag rug like this?
Vacuum with a suction-only head or shake it out, and blot spills promptly with mild soap and water. Avoid a beater-bar vacuum, which can pull the long fibers.
Does this rug shed?
New polypropylene shag often sheds loose fibers for the first few weeks. Regular light vacuuming clears it, and shedding usually settles down.
What sizes does the Athens Shag come in?
It is offered as a rectangle, runner, round and square. The listed rectangle is 5'1" x 7'6", and runners run about 8 feet long.
Is it safe for pets and kids?
The polypropylene pile is stain-resistant and the rug is OEKO-TEX certified. The deep pile does collect pet hair, so it needs frequent vacuuming.
When is the best time to buy it?
Prices on Safavieh rugs move with size and color and drop during seasonal home sales. Compare the current price with its recent range before buying.
