The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 is a fast telephoto zoom for Sony E-mount full-frame cameras. Questions and answers

Is the G2 worth it over the original 70-180mm?
Yes for most buyers. The G2 adds optical stabilization and a faster VXD focus motor, which matter for handheld and moving-subject work. The original is cheaper used if you shoot mostly on a stabilized body.
How does it compare with the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II?
The Sony is sharper at the edges, reaches 200mm and has better build and a tripod collar, but costs far more and is heavier. The Tamron gets close on center sharpness for a fraction of the price.
Does it work on APS-C Sony bodies?
Yes. On APS-C it gives a 105-270mm equivalent field of view, which suits sports and wildlife. It is designed for full-frame E-mount but mounts on APS-C E-mount cameras.
Is it compatible with teleconverters?
No. Tamron does not support Sony teleconverters on this lens, so 180mm is the maximum reach.
What is in the box?
The lens, front and rear caps, a lens hood and a soft case. A tripod collar is not included and is sold separately.
When is it cheapest?
It has sold around $999 at Adorama as of November 4, 2026, which is near the low end of its recent range. Holiday sales and bundle promotions are the usual times to watch for lower prices.
Where is the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 Lens cheapest?
