Is the WD80EFPX CMR or SMR?

It is CMR. WD lists conventional magnetic recording for this model, which matters for RAID rebuilds and sustained writes.

Will it work in my Synology or QNAP NAS?

Yes. It is a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive and fits most 4- to 8-bay NAS units. Check your NAS vendor's compatibility list for the exact model.

Is $354.99 a good price for 8 TB?

No. That is high for 8 TB; this capacity has often sold for well under $200. Wait for a sale unless you need a replacement now.

How does it compare with a WD Red Pro?

Red Pro drives spin at 7200 RPM and carry a higher workload rating for larger arrays. Red Plus is the quieter, cheaper choice for small NAS setups.

The drive only. No SATA cable or mounting screws are included, so have those ready for a new build.

NAS drives tend to drop during Black Friday and other storage sales. Track the price history and buy below the recent average.

Our take on the WD Red Plus WD80EFPX 8 TB Hard Drive

The WD Red Plus WD80EFPX is an 8 TB 3.5-inch SATA hard drive built for NAS boxes, using conventional magnetic recording (CMR) rather than shingled. It spins at 5640 RPM with a 256 MB cache and is rated for 180 TB of writes per year, which suits small RAID arrays and home servers. Its best new price is $354.99 at Amazon as of November 5, 2026. That is well above what 8 TB NAS drives have sold for in recent years, so it is a high price for this capacity.
