Is the Echo CS-590 worth it for firewood cutting?

Yes, if you cut several cords a year. It delivers power close to pro saws at a lower price, and the 5-year consumer warranty adds value.

How does it compare to the CS-490 or a Stihl MS 250?

The CS-590 has more displacement and torque than the CS-490, so it handles a 20-inch bar better in hardwood. Against the Stihl MS 250 it is heavier but stronger in big logs.

What bar and chain does it use?

It ships with a 20-inch bar and a 3/8-inch pitch, .050-gauge chain. Replacement bars and chains are common and easy to find.

It has no decompression valve, so cold starts take a firm pull. Follow the choke and fast-idle procedure in the manual and it starts reliably.

What comes in the box?

The saw, a 20-inch bar and chain, a scabbard and a tool kit. Bar oil and fuel mix are not included.

Prices tend to dip during fall and spring outdoor power equipment sales and around holiday promotions. Check price history before buying.

Our take on the Echo CS-590 Timber Wolf

The Echo CS-590 Timber Wolf is a 59.8 cc gas chainsaw with a 20-inch bar, aimed at homeowners and farmers who cut firewood regularly. It is known for strong cutting power for its price, a rear-handle layout and a clutch-driven adjustable oiler that cuts oil use. Echo backs it with a 5-year consumer warranty. It is a heavy, loud two-stroke saw, so it suits people who cut often rather than occasional trimmers.
