Our take on the Fort Knox Original Handgun Safe PB1 Pistol Box

The Fort Knox Original PB1 is a mechanical-lock handgun safe built around a 10-gauge steel body and a 3/16-inch wrap-around plate door. The current version adds a steel housing under the Simplex lock to resist punch attacks, and a gas strut holds the heavy door open. It is CA DOJ approved and carries a limited lifetime warranty. The best new price is $299.00 at Dean Safe as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is no cheaper new option to compare against right now.

Questions and answers

Is the Fort Knox PB1 worth $299?
At $299.00 at Dean Safe as of November 4, 2026, you are paying for thick steel and a battery-free lock that should last decades. If you only need light deterrence, a cheaper box will do; if you want pry resistance and no electronics, it is a fair price.
Will a full-size pistol with a weapon light fit?
The interior is 11.75 inches wide, 9.75 inches deep and 3.5 inches tall. Most full-size pistols fit, but a mounted light or red dot often pushes past the 3.5-inch height, so measure your setup first.
Does the Simplex lock need batteries?
No. It is a purely mechanical 5-button push-button lock, so it works without power and cannot be locked out by a dead battery. You set a combination of your choosing and can change it later.
How does the PB1 differ from older Fort Knox pistol boxes?
This updated version adds a steel housing underneath the lock to stop punch attacks on the lock body. The rest of the design, including the 10-gauge body and wrap-around door, carries over.
Can I bolt it down?
Yes. It has four 3/8-inch mounting holes, spaced 2-1/8 inches from each side, for lag bolts into a floor or shelf. Bolting it down is the main defense against someone carrying the 22-lb box away.
What comes in the box?
The safe, top and bottom foam cushions that can be removed for more depth, and mounting hardware. The gas strut is pre-installed.
Where is the Fort Knox Original Handgun Safe PB1 Pistol Box cheapest?
At Dean Safe, for $299.00, as of our latest check.
