Our take on the PowerBlock Elite EXP Adjustable Dumbbells

The PowerBlock Elite EXP is a compact adjustable dumbbell that replaces a full rack with one pair. Each dumbbell adjusts in 5 lb steps using a magnetic pin, and 2.5 lb cylinder adder weights let you fine-tune the load. The welded steel plates are powder-coated, and the handle sits through the center of mass for balanced lifting. At $399 at Target as of November 3, 2026, the latest best price sits at the top of its recent range, so waiting for a sale is reasonable if you are not in a hurry.

Pros
  • Replaces a full dumbbell rack in about a square foot of floor space
  • 5 lb jumps with 2.5 lb adder weights for finer progression
  • Welded steel plates and a knurled steel grip feel solid, not plasticky
  • Magnetic pin is secure and quick to change between sets
  • Open interior design gives room for a full range of motion on presses and curls
Cons
  • Rectangular shape and 12-inch length feel different from round dumbbells on some lifts
  • Handle is 32 mm, thicker than many standard dumbbells
  • Changing weight means pulling the pin and re-seating plates, slower than a dial system
  • Powder coat can wear at contact points with heavy use
  • At $399 it is near its recent high, and expansion kits cost extra

What reviewers say

Owners and reviewers generally rate the Elite EXP highly for build quality and space savings. Most criticism centers on the blocky shape and the slower pin-based weight changes compared with dial dumbbells.

Pros
  • Solid, rattle-free feel for a home adjustable dumbbell
  • Compact footprint frees up a lot of room
  • 5 lb increments suit steady strength progression
  • Durable finish and grip hold up over years of use
Cons
  • Rectangular plates can feel awkward on some exercises
  • Weight changes are slower than dial-based rivals
  • Thick 32 mm handle is a poor fit for smaller hands
  • Expansion kits add cost on top of an already premium price

Questions and answers

Is the PowerBlock Elite EXP worth $399?
It is a fair price for a welded-steel adjustable set that replaces many pairs, but $399 is at the top of its recent range. If you need the space savings now, it is worth it; otherwise a sale price is a better entry.
How much weight does each dumbbell hold?
The base Elite EXP pair adjusts in 5 lb steps with 2.5 lb adder weights, and PowerBlock sells expansion kits that raise the maximum per hand. Check which stage you are buying, since the base set and expanded set differ.
How does it compare with dial-based adjustable dumbbells?
The Elite EXP changes weight with a magnetic pin and is built from welded steel, so it feels more like commercial equipment. Dial dumbbells switch faster but often use more plastic and have a larger footprint.
Is the handle too thick for small hands?
The knurled steel handle is 32 mm, which is thicker than many standard dumbbells. Lifters with smaller hands often prefer a thinner handle or a glove.
What comes in the box?
The box includes the adjustable dumbbell pair with the magnetic pin and the 2.5 lb adder weights. Expansion kits and a stand are sold separately.
When is the best time to buy?
Adjustable dumbbells tend to drop during Black Friday and January fitness sales. At $399 at Target as of November 3, 2026, the price is near its recent high, so a holiday sale is worth watching.
Where is the PowerBlock Elite EXP Adjustable Dumbbells cheapest?
At Target, for $399.00, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the PowerBlock Elite EXP Adjustable Dumbbells?
6 stores we checked sell it, including Target, eBay, Newegg.com, Amazon, DICK'S Sporting Goods.
