Our take on the Room & Board York Sofa

The York is Room & Board's smaller-scale modern sofa, a 98-inch three-seater with a hardwood frame, loose fiber-down back cushions and blend-down seat cushions. It sits low at 19 inches with a 23-inch seat depth, and the Sumner fabric is treated to resist stains. It suits open living rooms where a deep, plush sofa would crowd the space.

Best forSmaller living rooms and apartmentsLounging and movie nightsHouseholds with kids or pets (stain-resistant fabric)Buyers who want a made-in-USA hardwood frame
Pros
  • Hardwood frame with a smaller footprint than most 98-inch sofas
  • Blend-down seat cushions balance softness and support
  • Loose cushions can be rotated and fluffed
  • Stain-resistant Sumner fabric handles everyday spills
  • Low 19-inch seat height and 23-inch depth suit shorter rooms
Cons
  • Down-blend cushions need regular fluffing and reshaping
  • Loose back cushions can look rumpled
  • Sumner fabric is not a performance weave like Sunbrella
  • 98 inches wide is still large for tight spaces
  • No sleeper or sectional option in this configuration

What reviewers say

Owners of Room & Board's down-cushion sofas generally praise the comfort and build quality, and the York's smaller scale draws positive comments from buyers with compact rooms. The common complaint is cushion maintenance: down blends flatten and need fluffing.

  • Solid hardwood construction
  • Fits smaller rooms better than most 98-inch sofas
  • Stain-resistant fabric holds up to daily use
Cons
  • Cushions flatten and need frequent fluffing

  • Fabric pilling reported by some owners

Questions and answers

Is the York Sofa good for a small living room?
Yes. At 98 inches wide and 35 inches deep it is shorter and shallower than most three-seat sofas, and the 19-inch seat height keeps it visually low. Measure your wall first: 98 inches still needs a long wall.
How does the York compare to Room & Board's Metro Sofa?
The Metro is deeper and has a more upright back, while the York is lower and more relaxed with loose down-blend cushions. Choose the York for lounging and the Metro for sitting upright.
Do the cushions need fluffing?
Yes. The seat uses a blend-down fill and the back is fiber-down, so both flatten with use. Plan to fluff and rotate them weekly to keep their shape.
Is the Sumner fabric good with pets?
It is stain-resistant, which helps with accidents, but it is a woven fabric rather than a tight performance weave. Claws can snag it, so consider a performance fabric option if you have cats.
What is included with the sofa?
The sofa ships as one piece with its seat and back cushions. Legs are typically attached or included; check the delivery details for white-glove assembly.
When is the best time to buy?
Room & Board runs occasional promotions, often around holidays and its clearance events. Watch the price history for dips rather than buying at full price.
