Our take on the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens

A compact full-frame E-mount prime for Sony mirrorless cameras, sold since 2013. It pairs a bright f/1.8 aperture with optical stabilization, which most 50mm primes in this price class skip, and weighs just 202 g. At $198 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it sits well below its typical new price of roughly $250 to $300, so this is a strong point in its price history.

Pros
  • Bright f/1.8 aperture for low light and shallow depth of field
  • Optical SteadyShot stabilization, rare on a 50mm prime
  • Light at 202 g and short at 62 mm
  • Silent stepping motor suits video and quiet venues
  • Internal focusing keeps the barrel length fixed
Cons
  • No weather sealing
  • Minimum focus distance of 39 cm limits close-up work
  • 0.16x magnification is modest for detail shots
  • Older design; autofocus is slower than newer Sony primes
  • Noticeable focus breathing and some edge softness wide open

Questions and answers

Is the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 OSS worth it at $198?
Yes, if you want a light, stabilized full-frame 50mm. At $198 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it is near the low end of its new-price range, so it is a good moment to buy.
How does it compare with the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 without OSS?
The OSS version adds stabilization, which matters for handheld video and slow shutter speeds. The non-OSS lens is slightly smaller and cheaper but gives up that advantage.
Does the stabilization work on all Sony E-mount bodies?
Yes. Optical SteadyShot works on any E-mount camera, and on bodies with in-body stabilization the two systems combine.
What is in the box?
The lens, front and rear caps, and a lens hood. No pouch or case is included.
Is it good for video?
Yes for handheld work, thanks to the silent stepping motor and stabilization. Expect some focus breathing when racking focus.
When is it cheapest?
It dips during Sony sale events and around major shopping holidays. The $198 at eBay as of November 4, 2026 is already below its usual new price.
Where is the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens cheapest?
At TriStateCamera.com, for $259.98, 35% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens?
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 1,600 ratings.
Where can I buy the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens?
13 stores we checked sell it, including TriStateCamera.com, Walmart, Crutchfield, Abt Electronics & Appliances, Adorama.
