Our take on the Sony FE 50mm F1.8 Lens

The Sony FE 50mm F1.8 is a full-frame E-mount prime, the cheapest fast 50mm Sony makes for its mirrorless bodies. It is small and light, with an f/1.8 aperture for low light and shallow depth of field, and an aspherical element to keep the lens compact. At $198 at Amazon as of November 7, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range; it has sold near $250 in tighter supply periods.

Corners are soft wide open at f/1.8
Plastic barrel and no weather sealing
Noticeable focus breathing and some longitudinal chromatic aberration
No aperture ring or focus hold button

What reviewers say

Owners treat it as the default budget 50mm for Sony full-frame: sharp enough, small, and cheap. Most complaints center on slow autofocus, soft corners wide open, and a plasticky build.

What people mention

AutofocusCriticisedOwners say it focuses slower and louder than Sony's more expensive 50mm lenses, especially in dim light.
SharpnessMixedCenter sharpness is good from f/2.8, but corners stay soft at f/1.8.
BuildCriticisedThe barrel is plastic and not weather sealed, which owners note as the main cost saving.

VideoMixedFocus is quiet enough for most clips, but focus breathing is visible when pulling focus.

Questions and answers

Is the Sony FE 50mm F1.8 worth it at $198?: Yes for a first fast prime on a Sony full-frame body. At $198 it is well below its usual $250 level, and no other new Sony FE 50mm is close on price.
Does it fit APS-C Sony cameras?: Yes. It mounts on E-mount APS-C bodies like the a6400 and a6700, where it behaves like a 75mm lens.
Does it have image stabilization?: The lens has no optical stabilization of its own. Stabilization comes from the camera body, so pair it with an IBIS-equipped model for handheld low-light shots.
How does it compare with the Sony FE 50mm F1.4 GM?: The F1.4 GM is sharper wide open, focuses faster, and is weather sealed, but it costs several times more and is much larger. The F1.8 is the value pick.
What is in the box?: The lens, front and rear caps, and a lens hood. No case or pouch is included.
When is it cheapest?: It has sold near $198 in past sales and sits there now. Waiting rarely saves much below that.
Where is the Sony FE 50mm F1.8 Lens cheapest?: At Amazon, for $198.00, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Sony FE 50mm F1.8 Lens?: 2 stores we checked sell it, including Amazon, Beachcamera.
