Our take on the The Futon Shop Softnest / Moonlight 8 Inch Certified Organic Latex Mattress

The Softnest (also sold as Moonlight) is an 8-inch certified organic latex mattress from The Futon Shop, handcrafted and sold as a futon pad that works on a platform bed or futon frame. It uses latex foam rather than polyurethane or memory foam, so it is springy, breathable and sleeps cooler than most foam beds. It is a niche pick: buyers who want an all-natural, low-profile mattress and are willing to give up the sink-in feel of memory foam. Ratings are thin at 3.8 out of 5 from 6 ratings, so treat the score as a small sample rather than a settled verdict.

Best forShoppers avoiding polyurethane and memory foamHot sleepers who want a breathable latex bedFuton frames and low platform bedsPeople who like a bouncy, responsive surface
Pros
  • Certified organic latex, no synthetic foam layers
  • 8-inch profile suits futon frames and low platforms
  • Latex is breathable and sleeps cooler than memory foam

Cons
  • Latex feels firm and bouncy, not plush
  • Only 6 ratings, so the 3.8 score is a weak signal

  • Latex costs more than a comparable polyurethane futon pad
  • No memory-foam pressure relief for side sleepers

Questions and answers

Is the Softnest the same as the Moonlight?
Yes. The Futon Shop sells this 8-inch organic latex mattress under both the Softnest and Moonlight names. Check the listing name and the 8-inch latex spec to confirm you are looking at the same bed.
Will it work on a standard futon frame?
It is built as a futon pad, so it is meant for futon frames and platform beds. An 8-inch latex pad is heavy, so use a frame rated for the weight and check the size before ordering.
How firm is it?
Latex at this thickness is generally firm and responsive rather than plush. Side sleepers who want pressure relief usually need a softer topper; back and stomach sleepers tend to find it supportive.
Does it sleep hot?
Latex is open-cell and breathable, so it generally sleeps cooler than memory foam. A breathable cover and cotton sheets help further.
Is it really certified organic?
The Futon Shop markets it as certified organic latex. Ask for the certification details if that claim matters to you, since the listing itself does not name the certifier.
When is the best time to buy?
Latex prices move less than foam, but holiday sales and mattress-event promotions are the usual windows for a discount. Compare the current price against its recent range before buying.
What do buyers say about the The Futon Shop Softnest / Moonlight 8 Inch Certified Organic Latex Mattress?
Rated 3.8 out of 5 from 6 ratings.
