Our take on the Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony E-Mount

The Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4 is a fixed 56mm prime for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras, giving roughly an 84mm full-frame equivalent field of view. The fast f/1.4 aperture makes it a portrait and low-light lens, with a compact black barrel and electronic contacts for autofocus and camera communication. At $199 at B&H Photo-Video-Audio as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, well under its typical launch pricing.

Questions and answers

Is the Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4 worth it at $199?
Yes, if you shoot APS-C Sony and want a fast portrait prime. At $199 at B&H Photo-Video-Audio as of November 4, 2026, it costs far less than Sony's 50mm f/1.8 or Sigma's 56mm f/1.4.
Does it work on full-frame Sony cameras?
It is designed for APS-C. On a full-frame body it works only in crop mode, where you get about 10MP on a 24MP sensor.
Does the lens have image stabilization?
The lens has no optical stabilization. Stabilization comes from the camera body, so pair it with an IBIS-equipped Sony body for handheld low-light shots.
What is in the box?
The lens, front and rear caps, and a lens hood. A pouch is not always included, so check the listing.
When is it cheapest?
Fast primes like this usually drop during holiday sales and bundle promotions. The current $199 is already near the bottom of its recent range.
