Our take on the Toro 39961 Power Max HD 2-Stage Snowblower

The Toro Power Max HD 39961 is a gas two-stage snowblower with a 28-inch clearing width and 21-inch intake height, built for large driveways and heavy, plowed-in snow. Two-stage design uses an auger to gather snow and a separate impeller to throw it far, which handles wet snow and drifts better than single-stage machines. It is a gas machine, so it needs fuel, oil changes and seasonal storage. It sits in Toro's heavier-duty HD line, above the standard Power Max models.

Questions and answers

Is the Toro Power Max HD 39961 worth it over a smaller two-stage?
For long driveways and heavy, wet snow, the 28-inch width and 21-inch intake save real time. For a short, flat driveway, a smaller or single-stage machine costs less and is easier to handle.
What is the difference between the Power Max HD and the standard Power Max?
The HD line is Toro's heavier-duty build, aimed at bigger snow loads and more frequent use. Standard Power Max models are lighter and less expensive but less suited to deep, wet snow.
Does it have electric start?
Toro's Power Max HD models typically include an electric starter in addition to pull start, so you can start it from a outlet with an extension cord in cold weather. Confirm the starter is included on the exact 39961 listing before buying.
How much snow can it handle?
The 21-inch intake height and two-stage design let it take deep drifts and plow banks in one pass. Very deep or icy banks may still need a second pass or slower speed.
What maintenance does a gas snowblower need?
Change the engine oil per the manual, use fresh fuel or a stabilizer, check the auger and drive belts, and service the spark plug. Drain or stabilize fuel before off-season storage.
When is it cheapest?
Snowblowers usually discount in late winter and early spring as stores clear stock, and again in early fall promotions. Prices are highest during and right after a major storm.
Where can I buy the Toro 39961 Power Max HD 2-Stage Snowblower?
4 stores we checked sell it, including Erie Power Equipment, Hilly Ridge Sales & Service, Luvians, Tri-State Bobcat.
