How does the self-sharpening block work?

Each slot has built-in ceramic or carbide sharpeners that grind the edge slightly as you insert or pull out a knife. It keeps edges usable without a steel, but it removes metal over time.

Is this set worth it at $140.97?

At $140.97 at Target as of November 6, 2026, it is at the low end of its recent range. For a first full block with steak knives and shears, that is a reasonable buy.

Can the knives go in the dishwasher?

Henckels rates the molded-handle Solution knives as dishwasher safe, but hand washing keeps edges sharper longer and protects the block.

The 14 pieces include an 8-inch chef's knife, 8-inch bread knife, 7-inch santoku, 5-inch utility knife, 3-inch paring knife, six steak knives, kitchen shears, a sharpening steel and the self-sharpening block.

How does it compare with the Henckels Definition set?

Definition uses forged blades and a heavier feel; Solution is lighter and stamped, with the self-sharpening block as its main draw. Solution costs less.

Knife block sets usually dip during holiday and wedding-season sales. Watch the price history and buy when it drops near or below $140.
