Is the Gibson Gene Simmons G2 Thunderbird worth $1,699?

That depends on whether you want the signature model. At $1,699 at The Music Zoo as of November 4, 2026, you pay a premium over a standard Thunderbird for the Gene Simmons spec and finish. If you mainly want Thunderbird tone, a non-signature model costs less.

How does it compare with a standard Gibson Thunderbird?

Both use a 34-inch scale and a Thunderbird body. The G2 adds the Gene Simmons signature spec, an ebony fingerboard, and a Hipshot bridge, and it is priced higher than a standard Thunderbird.

Gibson lists it at about 9 lbs. That is on the heavy side for a bass, so a wide strap helps on long sets.

What strings does it ship with?

It is strung with .045, .065, .085, and .105 gauge strings, a standard light-to-medium set for a four-string bass.

Is it right-handed only?

Yes. Gibson lists the G2 Thunderbird as a right-handed instrument only.

When is the best time to buy it?

Only one new price is listed, $1,699 at The Music Zoo as of November 4, 2026. With no competing new listings, watch for seasonal sales at that store rather than expecting a lower price elsewhere.

Our take on the Gibson Gene Simmons G2 Thunderbird

The Gibson Gene Simmons G2 Thunderbird is a signature four-string bass built to the Kiss bassist's specs: a mahogany body and neck, ebony fingerboard, and a Hipshot bridge. It uses a 34-inch scale, a 1.6-inch Graph Tech nut, and a gloss nitrocellulose finish in Ebony. At $1,699 at The Music Zoo as of November 4, 2026, it is the only new price listed, so there is no lower new price to compare against.
