Is the Yamaha BB735A worth it?

For players who want a well-built passive five-string with P/J pickups, yes. At $979.99 at Amazon as of November 4, 2026, it is near the top of its recent price range, so waiting for a dip could save money.

How does it compare to the BB734A?

The BB735A adds a fifth string; the BB734A is the four-string version with the same body, neck woods and P/J pickups. Choose the 735A if you need the low B.

Is the neck too wide for small hands?

The 43 mm nut is wider than most four-string basses, which some players notice at first. The 34-inch scale keeps the reach familiar, but try one before buying if neck width matters to you.

What pickups does it have?

It uses a P/J configuration: a split-coil precision pickup and a single-coil jazz pickup. Blending them gives anything from thick and round to bright and growly.

You get the bass itself; a gig bag or case is not included. Plan for a case or bag if you transport it.

When is the best time to buy?

Prices on this model move little, but holiday sales and store promotions are the usual windows. Check the price history before buying at the current $979.99.

Our take on the Yamaha BB735A

The Yamaha BB735A is a five-string electric bass from Yamaha's BB series, built with a maple/mahogany neck, alder body and rosewood fingerboard. It pairs a P/J pickup setup with a 34-inch scale and a 43 mm Graph Tech nut, so the string spacing feels close to a four-string. The dark coffee sunburst and matte translucent black finishes are the standout looks. At $979.99 at Amazon as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent range, with only two stores listing it new.
