Our take on the Jonathan Charles Buckingham Traditional Rectangular Wood Console Table in Antique Mahogany

The Jonathan Charles Buckingham is a 54-inch traditional console table in medium antique mahogany finish, built on an acacia frame with mahogany veneer. It has two drawers, brass hardware, marquetry inlays and a Y-frame stretcher under tapering square legs. At 36 inches tall and 14 inches deep, it is sized for a hallway or dining room wall rather than a sofa back. It is a niche luxury piece, so pricing is set by the few dealers that carry the line rather than by broad retail competition.

Best forFormal entryways and hallwaysTraditional and French Empire interiorsBuyers wanting real veneer and marquetry, not laminateDining rooms needing a serving or display surface
Pros
  • Genuine mahogany veneer over an acacia frame
  • Marquetry inlays and brass hardware lift it above plain consoles
  • Two drawers add usable storage in a narrow 14-inch depth
  • Y-frame stretcher and tapered legs read as period-correct
  • 54-inch length gives a generous surface without much floor footprint
Cons
  • 66 lbs and 54 inches long make it a two-person delivery
  • Veneer and inlay can lift or chip if the table gets wet or knocked
  • Antique mahogany finish limits it to traditional rooms
  • Sold through few dealers, so price comparison is thin
  • No cable cutouts or lower shelf for media use

Questions and answers

Is the Buckingham console solid mahogany?
No. The frame is acacia and the visible surfaces are mahogany veneer, with marquetry inlays. That construction is normal at this level and keeps the weight to 66 lbs, but it is not a solid-mahogany piece.
Will it fit in a hallway?
It is 54 inches long, 14 inches deep and 36 inches tall, so it needs a wall run of at least 54 inches and about 3 feet of clearance in front for drawers to open. The shallow depth suits narrow halls.
What can the two drawers hold?
They are shallow console drawers, best for keys, mail, gloves, cutlery or table linens. Do not expect filing or deep storage.
How should I care for the veneer and inlays?
Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth and keep drinks and plants off the top, since moisture is the main threat to veneer and marquetry. Avoid silicone polishes and direct sun, which can fade the antique mahogany finish.
Does it come assembled?
Jonathan Charles consoles of this type typically ship with legs detached or partly assembled, so check the dealer's delivery terms. At 66 lbs, plan for two people to move and position it.
When is the best time to buy?
Luxury case goods like this rarely discount deeply, but dealer floor-sample sales and end-of-season events are the usual windows. Compare quotes across the dealers that stock the line before ordering.
