Our take on the Sonor AQ2 Safari Maple 4-Piece Shell Pack

The Sonor AQ2 Safari is a compact four-piece maple shell pack built for small stages, tight rehearsal rooms and easy transport. It pairs a 16x15 bass drum with a 10x7 rack tom, a 13x12 floor tom and a 13x6 snare, all in maple shells with a tom holder included. At $789 at Guitar Center as of November 7, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range across the five stores that carry it new.

Best forGigging drummers with small cars or cramped stagesApartment and home players who need lower volumePlayers who want maple shells at a mid priceDrummers building a compact jazz or cafe kit

Pros

All-maple shells give a warm, focused tone at this price
16-inch bass drum keeps the footprint small without losing punch
13x6 snare is deep enough for a solid backbeat
Tom holder included, so the kit is playable out of the box
Five finishes, including blue, black, titanium, white and brown

Cons

28 kg shipping weight makes it a two-trip load for one person
Small bass drum has less low-end thump than a 20- or 22-inch
Only one rack tom, so fills are limited without adding drums
Wood bass drum hoops are more fragile than steel
No cymbals, throne or pedal included

Questions and answers

Is the Sonor AQ2 Safari good for gigging?: Yes. The compact 16-inch bass drum and small toms load easily and suit small stages, cafes and rehearsals. For loud rock with a big low end, a larger kit will serve better.
Does it come with cymbals or a pedal?: No. The shell pack includes the bass drum, snare, rack tom, floor tom and a tom holder. You need to add cymbals, a hi-hat stand, a bass drum pedal and a throne.
What is the shell material?: The shells are maple, which gives a warm, balanced tone. The bass drum uses wood hoops, while the toms and snare use steel hoops.
Is $789 a good price?: It is the best new price found across five stores as of November 7, 2026, and sits at the low end of its recent range. That makes it a fair buy if you want this configuration.
How big is the kit when set up?: It is a compact kit: a 16x15 bass drum, 10x7 rack tom, 13x12 floor tom and 13x6 snare. It fits in small rooms and most car trunks.
