Our take on the The Futon Shop All Natural Latex and Cotton Japanese Floor Futon Mattress

The Futon Shop's Japanese floor futon is a shikibuton made with all-natural latex and cotton, designed to be laid directly on the floor and folded away during the day. It is an organic, latex-foam alternative to a standard mattress for people who want a firm, low sleeping surface. The brand sells it direct, so pricing depends on size and configuration rather than store markdowns.

Pros
  • All-natural latex and cotton build with no synthetic foam
  • Firm, supportive surface that suits back and stomach sleepers
  • Folds or rolls for storage, freeing floor space by day
  • Latex resists sagging better than cotton batting alone
  • Organic materials appeal to chemically sensitive sleepers
Cons
  • No box spring or base, so it sits directly on the floor
  • Thin profile offers little cushioning for heavy sleepers
  • Latex and cotton can feel warm in summer
  • Needs regular airing and turning to stay fresh
  • Return shipping on a bulky item can be costly

Questions and answers

Is a floor futon good for back pain?
A firm latex-and-cotton futon like this supports the spine and is often chosen by back sleepers. Side sleepers may find it too firm without a topper.
How thick is it, and will I feel the floor?
Shikibutons are thin by design, typically a few inches of latex and cotton. Most adults feel the floor through it, which is the intended firm feel.
How do I clean and store it?
Air it out regularly and spot clean the cotton cover; latex should not be soaked. Fold or roll it during the day and keep it dry to prevent mildew.
Does it need a frame or tatami mat?
No frame is required, but a tatami mat or slatted platform under it improves airflow and keeps moisture away from the floor.
Is it worth the price over a foam mattress?
It suits people who want a firm, natural, storable bed. If you want plush cushioning or a conventional bed height, a standard mattress is the better buy.
