Our take on the The Futon Shop Natural Wool Organic Cotton Shiki Futon Mattress

The Futon Shop Natural Wool Organic Cotton Shiki Futon Mattress is a traditional Japanese-style shikibuton that lays flat on the floor or a platform, handmade with American-grown wool and organic cotton stuffing under an organic cotton cover. It is a soft-firmness, lace-tacked mattress with no springs or foam, so it packs down and folds for storage. The only recorded daily price is $357.48 as of November 1, 2026, so there is no prior range to compare against yet.

Questions and answers

Is this futon worth it over a cheaper cotton futon?
If you want wool's temperature and resilience plus organic certification, yes. A cotton-only futon costs less but compresses faster and offers less loft.
How does it compare with a foam mattress?
It is much firmer and thinner, with no bounce or edge support. Choose it for a traditional floor feel, not for pressure relief like memory foam.
Does it need a frame or base?
No frame is required, but use it on a tatami mat, rug or slatted platform to keep it aired and protect the floor.
What size and weight should I expect?
It comes in standard sizes up to King; the King 5-inch version carries about 60 lbs of fill, so plan for two people to move it.
How do I care for it?
Air it in sunlight regularly, rotate and flip it, and spot clean the organic cotton cover. Avoid soaking the wool fill.
When is it cheapest?
The only recorded daily price is $357.48 as of November 1, 2026. Watch for seasonal sales, since no lower price has been logged yet.
