Is a shikibuton good for side sleepers?

Usually not on its own. At 5 inches of medium-firm cotton, it gives little shoulder and hip cushioning; side sleepers often add a topper or choose a thicker futon.

How do I care for a cotton shikibuton?

Airing it out regularly, ideally in sun, keeps the cotton dry and slows compression. Rotate and flip it periodically, and use a moisture barrier on humid floors.

Does it need a frame or tatami mat?

No, it is designed to go on the floor. A tatami mat or slatted platform underneath improves airflow and keeps the cotton drier.

How firm is it compared with a standard mattress?

Firmer than most innerspring or foam mattresses. Expect a dense, supportive surface that softens slightly with use but stays on the firm side.

Is the cotton really organic?

The listing states organic certification for the cotton fill and cover fabric. Ask the seller for the certifying body if that matters to you.

Our take on the The Futon Shop Japanese Organic Cotton Shikibuton Futon Mattress

This is a traditional Japanese-style shikibuton: a 5-inch cotton mattress you lay directly on the floor, handcrafted with organic cotton fill and an organic cotton cover. It is medium firm and lace-tacked to hold the cotton in place, and a King weighs about 60 lbs, so it is heavy to move and air out. It suits people who want a firm, low, minimalist bed or a guest floor mat rather than a soft mattress.
