Is this futon good for side sleepers?

It is medium firm and only about 5 inches thick, so side sleepers often find it too firm and may need a topper. Back and stomach sleepers usually adapt better.

How does it compare with a foam or innerspring futon?

It uses layered organic cotton rather than foam or springs, so it feels firmer and denser and does not bounce. Foam futons are lighter and softer but use synthetic materials.

Does it need a frame or tatami mat?

No frame is required, but it is designed to sit on the floor or a tatami mat. A slatted platform or mat helps airflow and reduces moisture buildup underneath.

How often should I air it out?

Cotton futons absorb moisture, so airing it in sunlight and rotating it regularly helps keep the fill fresh and even. Many owners air it weekly or whenever it feels damp.

What sizes and weights are available?

It comes in multiple sizes; the King 5-inch version carries about 60 lbs of fill. Larger sizes are heavier and harder to fold and move alone.

When is the best time to buy it?

Watch for seasonal sales and holiday promotions, when The Futon Shop and other retailers discount futons. Compare the current price against its recent range before buying.

Our take on the The Futon Shop Japanese Organic Cotton Shiki Futon Shikibuton

The Futon Shop Japanese Organic Cotton Shiki Futon is a traditional Japanese-style floor mattress made with organic cotton fill and an organic cotton cover. It is handcrafted with lace tacking and a medium-firm feel, and it is not raised, so it is meant to be used directly on the floor or a tatami mat. It suits people who want a simple, natural-material sleep surface rather than a conventional mattress and frame.
