Our take on the Frontline Shield for Dogs

Frontline Shield is a monthly topical flea and tick treatment for dogs, sold here as a 3-month supply for dogs 11–20 lbs. It combines fipronil, permethrin and pyriproxyfen, which kill adult fleas and ticks and also stop flea eggs and larvae from developing. The formula is waterproof and unscented. At $52.48 at Chewy.com as of November 4, 2026, the 3-month pack works out to about $17.50 a month, which is in line with typical Frontline pricing rather than a standout deal.

Best forOwners of small dogs (11–20 lbs) who want a monthly topicalHouseholds fighting an active flea infestationDog owners who want flea egg and larval control, not just adult flea killDogs that swim or get bathed often, since the formula is waterproof
Pros
  • Three active ingredients cover adult fleas, eggs and larvae plus ticks
  • Waterproof once dry, so bathing and swimming are less of a problem
  • Unscented topical, applied between the shoulder blades
  • 3-month pack at about $17.50 a month
  • Also targets mosquitoes and stable flies
Cons
  • Not for cats, and permethrin is toxic to them, so multi-pet homes need care
  • Only for dogs 11–20 lbs; other weights need a different pack
  • Monthly reapplication required; it does not last a full season
  • Some dogs show skin irritation or greasy fur at the application site
  • Does not repel ticks, only kills them after they attach

Questions and answers

Is Frontline Shield worth it over regular Frontline Plus?
Shield adds permethrin, which also targets mosquitoes and stable flies, on top of the fipronil and pyriproxyfen in Plus. If mosquitoes or flies are a problem where you live, that extra coverage is the main reason to pay more.
Can I use it on cats or around cats?
No. It contains permethrin, which is toxic to cats. Keep treated dogs away from cats until the product is fully dry, and never apply a dog dose to a cat.
How often do I apply it?
Once a month. Each pack covers three months, so one 3-month supply lasts a single dog for a season quarter.
Does it still work if my dog gets wet?
Yes. The formula is waterproof once dry, so normal bathing and swimming should not wash away protection. Wait until the application site is dry before letting the dog swim.
Which weight of dog is this pack for?
Dogs from 11 to 20 lbs. Dogs outside that range need the matching weight pack, since dosing is set by body weight.
When is the price lowest?
Flea and tick products tend to drop in spring and early summer when demand peaks, and again in fall clearance. At $52.48 for three months at Chewy.com as of November 4, 2026, compare against the other two stores before buying.
Where is the Frontline Shield for Dogs cheapest?
At eBay, for $45.95, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Frontline Shield for Dogs?
Rated 3.7 out of 5 from 972 ratings.
Where can I buy the Frontline Shield for Dogs?
12 stores we checked sell it, including eBay, PetCareRx, Chewy.com, Tractor Supply Company, Walmart.
