Is the Cort Action PJ good for a beginner?

Yes. It has standard 34-inch scale, 24 frets and a simple passive PJ setup, so it teaches the same layout as most basses. Budget tonewoods and pickups are the main compromises.

What is the difference between the Action PJ and the Action Bass?

The PJ has a Precision-style split pickup plus a Jazz-style single coil, with two volume knobs to blend them. The plain Action Bass uses a single pickup, so the PJ offers more tonal options.

Is the Cort Action PJ active or passive?

It is passive. The controls are two volumes and one tone, with no battery or onboard preamp.

What is the scale length and string count?

It is a 4-string with a 34-inch (864 mm) scale and 24 frets, the standard long-scale bass layout.

Our take on the Cort Action PJ

The Cort Action PJ is a budget 4-string electric bass built for beginners and players adding a second instrument. It pairs a poplar body with a hard maple neck and jatoba fretboard, and uses a PJ pickup set with two volumes and one tone for a range of tones from punchy to round. The 34-inch scale and 24 frets are standard bass dimensions, so it plays like a full-size instrument. At $210.50 at gear4music.com as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of what the five stores listing it charge.
